The president of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, said that he submitted a request to Parliament to hold a referendum on the question of whether the country adopts the euro as a currency.
“Bulgaria, as a full member of the European Union, faces a strategic decision – the introduction of the single European currency,” said Radev in a national address.
“The referendum will be a test of democracy of the National Assembly and will show which will follow the principles of democracy and which denies the Bulgarians the right to determine their future. The referendum will be beneficial for Bulgarian democracy.”
The path to the euro zone was not easy for Bulgaria.
In 2024, the European Central Bank said that the country could not reach the monetary union because inflation in the country was too high.
And in February of this year, Sofia police clashed with nationalist demonstrators Who demanded the government's scrap planned to join the euro zone.

The new government, trained last month, has made a key priority to the euro zone.
But not everyone is convinced that Bulgaria is ready to reach the euro zone.
Some economists say that the country does not have an acceptable degree of economic condition to reach the euro zone and that it is not yet ready to adopt the single currency.
But the government, supported by other pro-European parties in Parliament, underline the political importance of adoption as another step to deepen European integration in the midst of increasing geopolitical tensions.
Trying to distract the country from this objective, pro-Russian nationalists would prepare for more stormy battles and would have used disinformation as a tool to spread people's fear.
