The best US trade officials will hold talks with their Chinese counterparts later this week in Switzerland, the White House confirmed.
It will be the first time that main representatives of the two countries will meet in person since the climbing of a trade war earlier this year.
The secretary in the United States of the Treasury Scott Bessent and the US trade representative Jamieson Greer will speak of a Chinese delegation which will include the vice-president of the country He Lifeng.
Translections occur several months after US President Donald Trump has shot the world economy by announcing radical prices on April 2. China has been the most hard -hit country by measures.
The United States is currently imposing 145% tariffs on Chinese products, while counter-tricgers in China are 125%. However, the two countries have allowed exemptions to reduce the impact.
However, the United States and China have the consequences, trade between the two largest economies in the world has considerably reduced.
Forecastists have raised the possibility that the United States slipped into a recession, while Chinese factory activity has contracted in April at its lowest level since December 2023.
Speaking of talks in Switzerland, Bessent said they could report a change in management.
“My feeling is that it will be a question of de -escalation, not the Big Trade agreement … But we have to defuse before we can move forward,” said Bessent to Fox News.
Beijing said he would attend talks after being approached by Washington.
A spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce has also said that China would not “sacrifice its world principles or equity to request an agreement”.
Wendy Cutler, a former American trade official who is now vice-president of the Asia Society Policy Institute, praised development.
“As a first face -to -face meeting between senior American officials and senior Chinese officials since Trump's inauguration, it is an important opportunity to have initial discussions on the progress of certain prices, to map a way to follow, as well as to raise concerns,” said Cutler.
“We must not expect fast victories – it will be a process that will take time.”
