The research and rescue teams in Jordan recovered the bodies of a Belgian mother and her son, one day after the woman and her three children were missing during the sudden floods.

The other two children in the same family were found alive.

Sunday floods in southern Jordan also led to the evacuation of hundreds of tourists from the archaeological site of Petra, the main tourist attraction of the country.

The mother and the children were part of a group of 18 tourists who had made an adventure trip to Wadi al-Nakhil when they were caught in the sudden flood, said local governor of the Ma'an district, Hassan al-Jabour, told Al-Mamlaka TV state media.

Fourteen tourists, all Czech nationals, were rescued on Sunday.

Rescue teams located two of the living children on Sunday evening, said Al-Jabour.

The research and rescue operation was suspended around 2 am due to complex weather and land conditions.

The bodies of the woman and her son were found on Monday morning after research resumed, he said.

More details on the family and children's ages were not immediately available.

Jordan often experiences sudden floods while heavy seasonal rains send water torrents through dry valleys of the desert.

At least three people died in 2021 when flood waters swept their car, while more than 30 people were killed in sudden floods that struck the Dead Sea coast of Petra and Jordan in two separate floods in 2018.
