Improvement of relationships

The Singapore ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Eric Teo, said that the two countries had drawn a similar path without any natural resources, based only on their people to succeed.

“We not only classify the 10 best trading and investment partners of everyone, but we also collaborate closely in new and emerging fields such as digital economy, artificial intelligence and startups, energy, sustainability and many other fields,” he added.

“We are impatient to upgrade our relationships with a strategic partnership this year, during the 50th anniversary.”

The president of the National Assembly of South Korea, Woo Won-Shik, also praised the close bilateral ties, saying that he was planning to go to Singapore this year.

In February, his Singaporean counterpart, president of the Parliament, Seah Kian Peng, visited Seoul and met Mr. Woo. The two parties have exchanged points of view on the common challenges on global developments and the means of stimulating internal links.

“High-level exchanges are extremely important. In this sense, after the speaker visit to Korea, my visit to Singapore and the participation of our leaders in APEC, I think that we can achieve not only progress in one field, but development in many areas,” said Woo, referring to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum which will be organized in South Korea this year.

Former South Korean Minister for Foreign Affairs, Yu Myung-Hwan, said that he was thinking that relations between Singapore and South Korea will still be strengthened.

“Singapore is a bridge for the Korean government as well as for the Circle of Korean affairs in the countries of Southeast Asia,” he added.

“ASEAN is very important for Korea. So I think it is inevitable that Korea and Singapore must cooperate with each other to strengthen our participation in the Southeast Asian countries.”
