Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney will meet Donald Trump in Washington on Tuesday in order to relaunch a crucial commercial relationship with the United States that the Ottawa chief recently described as “on”.
It will be the first visit abroad of Carney since his liberal party won a general election Monday after a campaign eclipsed by the truancy of the American president on Canada and his price on some of its exports.
Carney In Ottawa on Friday, said that he had made a “very constructive call” with Trump and that the two leaders had agreed to meet next week in the American capital.
“We will focus on both immediate trade pressures and broader economic and security relations between our two sovereign nations,” he said.
Carney also announced that King Charles would deliver a speech to open the new parliament in Ottawa later this month.
“This historical honor corresponds to the weight of our time,” said Carney about the king's visit, who is also the sovereign of Canada. It will be the first time in almost 50 years that the monarch has participated in the opening of the Parliament.
Carney spoke during his first press conference since his liberals beat the conservative party of Pierre Poilievre after a campaign dominated by the debate on the relations of Trump and Canada with his most important trading partner.
The mockery of Trump of Canada and his former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as well as the president's threats to annex the country – which he described as a potential “51st state” – propelled the Liberal Party of a second far from the surveys last year to victory this week.

Carney, who will lead a minority government after his party has brought together by winning the majority of seats in Parliament, described his vision to “advance national construction investments that will transform our economy”.
