Murders linked to Rock Brussels gangs
Brussels has been shaken by a series of shootings related to drug gangs in recent years.
Eleven gun attacks were recorded in the capital in the first six weeks of this year only, with two people killed and four injured. Such an incident of shooting in February led to a manhunt and the temporary closure of many metro stations in the city.
Although it is not clear if the incidents are linked, they are supposed to be linked to territorial disputes between different drug gangs in the capital.
The port of Antwerp – 55 kilometers north of Brussels – is a hub for European cocaine imports and has been struck by grenade explosions linked to ganglands fighting.
Security officials said violence should walk in other cities in Belgium.
The groups of citizens have more and more complained of anarchy in several districts of Brussels at night and demanded a greater police presence.
The new Belgian government, led by the Flemish nationalist Bart de Wever, said that he wanted the police areas to be permanently merged to better combat violence in the city.
In an incident separated from violence in Brussels this week, an armed robbery took place on Monday afternoon in a jewelry store in the city center, said the prosecutor's office.
The police were sent to the store, but the suspects had already fled, he said. There was no injury and investigations were underway, according to local police.
