5:40 p.m. – We have now confirmed Elway was indeed driving the golf cart.
NFL legend John Elway was in the middle of the golf cart accident that left his longtime friend to Life Support, and he could have driven … TMZ Sports learned.
The police and other sources tell us that Elway was on the golf cart Saturday evening at the Quinta, California, when Jeff Sperbeck – John's trading partner and former agent – fell from the back of the moving vehicle, rolled up and hit the head on the asphalt … undergoing a traumatic injury.
John, Jeff and their wives had been at the Festival de Musique Stagecoach earlier during the day in Indio nearby, and left a post-fire when the accident occurred.
We are told that John is the one who made the call at 911 immediately after the accident … and when the paramedical paramedics arrived, Jeff was unconscious but always breathes. The 61 -year -old man was transported to the regional desert medical center in Palm Springs.
Now, several sources tell us that John actually led golf cart, however, we were unable to confirm it with Elway. There is no indication that he did anything wrong.
No one else was injured in the accident – which occurred in the field of a private golf community – and we are told that the cops did not respond to the scene.
By all accounts, paramedical paramedics and hospital employees did everything they could to save Jeff, but as TMZ Sports first reported … the prognosis is not good. We are told that he has shown life in life when doctors are preparing to harvest his organs for a donation.
John and Jeff remained close friends after the NFL Elway retirement and started 7celars Winery together in 2013.
