There is a new sherry in Sherry-Maître barrel whiskey in town, and – Shocker – This is not another Macallan release. No, it's a whole new single of 43 years TamdhuAn under-recognition but superb distillery located in the heart of Speyside which matures its whiskey only in sherry barrels. We had an early taste, and it's excellent.
It is one of the oldest versions of Tamdhu, a distillery that dates back to 1897. He changed the property over the years, as is often the case with Scotch Whiskey distilleries, more recently acquired by Ian Macleod Distillers in 2011 (who also owns GlengoyneRosebank, Smokeheadand Edinburgh Gin). The 43-year-old man is part of the new distillery dedication collection, which will include other ultra-aged and rare whiskeys as future versions, which (like the entire stock of the distillery) were aged in the barrels of Sherry Oloroso.
“The liberation of Tamdhu, 43, is a historic moment for our distillery,” said the director of the Sandy McIntyre distillery in a statement. “To have a whiskey this age, matured exclusively in three exceptional Sherry oak barrels, is a real gem that illustrates the incredible depth and complexity that only time can create. This is an incredibly limited version, with only a selected number of bottles available in the United States, which makes it a unique opportunity.”
As McIntyre mentioned, whiskey came from only three barrels, including two distilled and bankrupt in 1978 and the other in 1979; It was bottled at 50.8% ABV. During a recent tasting, I had the chance to taste whiskey alongside expressions of simple tamdhu barrels aged for about 18 years, one of which was matured in a buttock of Sherry in American oak and the other in a barrel of European oak. There is a marked difference between the two in terms of flavor and color, so the main range consists of a combination of the different types of oak. According to Tamdhu’s world brand ambassador, Gordon Dundas, he’s not in what Wood the 43 -year -old had aged, but he’s nevertheless a charming whiskey. The mouth is full of grape notes covered with chocolate, burned caramel, orange zest, grape jelly and ripe tropical fruits with soft tannin and leather in the finish. If you were lucky to try aged whiskey from similar people MacallanIt is interesting to consider how different this liquid is – waterproof of the many different production factors that make each whiskey unique even after having passed so long inside a barrel.
Available for $ 16,000 each at specialized retailers, Tamdhu, 43, is delivered in a networked crystal settling individually inside a metal and wooden box. However, only 100 bottles are published, with part of those who come to the United States, you can also find other bottles in the Tamdhu range available for purchase from Reserve bar NOW.
