New Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on Sunday that the American comments concerning the Arctic Island rich in minerals had been disrespectful, stressing that Greenland “will never be an element of property that can be bought by anyone.”
His comments came after a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Put Frederiksen in his official residence on Sunday, the second day of an official three -day visit.
Nielsen's remarks were in response to the repeated interest of the state of the American president Donald Trump to take control of the Arctic island rich in minerals.
During the press conference, Nielsen said that “speeches in the United States were not respectful”.
He continued: “The words used were not respectful. This is why we need in this situation, we have to keep together. ”
The political parties of Greenland, which recommended a possible independence from Denmark for years, have recently trained a broad coalition government in response to Trump's ambitions concerning the territory.
The Greenlandic government said that the three -day Nielsen visit, which began on Saturday, aimed to promote future cooperation between the two nations.
“Denmark has the will to invest in green society, and we have not only that for historical reasons. We also have this because we are part of the Commonwealth (the Danish) with each other, “said Frederiksen.
“We have of course the desire to continue to invest in green society,” she continued.
Nielsen should meet King Frederik X on Monday, before returning to Greenland with Frederiksen for a royal visit to the island.
When asked if a meeting between them and Trump was in preparation, Frederiksen replied: “We always want to meet the American president. Of course, we want it. But I think we were very, very clear in the approach (Danish of the Commonwealth) for all the parts of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
