Seoul: South Korea prosecutors said Thursday, April 24, that they had charged former President Moon Jae-in for corruption linked to the employment of his son-in-law in a airline.
Moon was “charged with corruption for receiving 217 million won (US $ 150,000) as part of his son -in -law's employment facilitation in a airline,” Jeonju district prosecutors said in a statement.
The case is added to the captivating political drama in South Korea, which faces elections on June 3 after Yoon Suk-Yeol was stripped of his presidency for having briefly imposed martial law.
Moon, who was president of 2017 to 2022, was known to have continued his commitment with North Korea, including negotiation talks between Pyongyang Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in his first mandate.
According to prosecutors, Moon's son -in -law was appointed Managing Director by low -cost airline Thai Eastar Jet, “despite experience or relevant qualifications in the air transport industry”.
The son-in-law “frequently left his post for long periods … and did not exercise his functions in a way adapted to the position,” they said.
The airline, which was actually controlled by a former MP of Moon's feast, had given the son -in -law of the work in order to win favors of the president of the time, prosecutors said.
According to prosecutors, any salary and other financial advantages paid by the airline in son-in-law between 2018 and 2020 “have been confirmed as legitimate salary payments, but bribes intended for the president”.
The son -in -law then divorced Moon's daughter.
