Rye whiskey has become very popular in the past decade thanks to the high quality outings of distilleries like MGP in Indiana, which produces whiskey for many other brands, and the James B. Beam Distilling Co.,, Sky hillAnd Buffalo trace at Kentucky. But Rye Whiskey has historical links with the East Coast, especially states like Pennsylvania and Maryland. One of the best distilleries more recent to call this last house is Sagamore SpiritAnd he has just released a new barrel whiskey in barrels that is worth checking.
Sagamore Spirit was founded more than a decade ago by the founder of Sous Amour, Kevin Plank with other investors (the Italian company Illva Saronno Hold Spa acquired majority participation in the distillery in 2023). Its main range consists of rye whiskeys from MGP—A mixture of upper and lower rye mashbills which are about four to six years old. But in recent years, the distillery has also published expressions composed of distilled and matured internally at the Baltimore distillery, including some excellent bottles. The last expression of the force of the barrel also enters this category.
The distillery calls this “100% of Maryland”, indicating that this whiskey was produced in Sagamore without any original whiskey in the mixture. He has aged for seven years in new American charred oak barrels and in a bottle in a barrel of 61.5% abv – it's strong, but fortunately nowhere hazard. Like the others Sagamore Expressions, this whiskey is a mixture of two rye whiskey purees – one with a higher percentage of rye than the other – something that brings it out of whiskies produced to MGP Or the “barely legal” style associated with many Kentucky distilleries. It is made of relatively small lots of 23 barrels and filtered wireless. We have not yet been able to taste this whiskey, but the official tasting notes describe dark chocolate, black cherry, freshly cracked black pepper, caramel and honey in the mouth, followed by a tough oak finish.
Of course, if the force spirits are not your thing, no more power for you – and there are many other options to try Sagamore Spirit. The basic expressions are quite good, and in recent years, there have been interesting whiskeys finished in barrels, notably the port, the sherry, the tequila, the rum, the beer, the calvados and even the barley. Certainly check the expression of Manhattan's finish, part of the reserve series, which was finished in the Vermouth, the Amers and the Brandy Cherryier barrels before being mixed to evoke a classic Manhattan cocktail.
