The wearers wore the simple wooden coffin through the doors of the Vatican, followed by cardinals dressed in scarlet and Swiss guards in a ceremonial dress.
The 88 -year -old pontiff, who died on Monday after a stroke, was first in the state in private to Domus Santa Marta. Now, his coffin rests on the main altar of the basilica, without the traditional elevation on a beer.
The visualization of the public at the basilica will continue until midnight Wednesday and Thursday, ending Friday evening.
The funeral is scheduled for Saturday morning in St Peter's square, with world leaders present.
