It has been 21 years since the winner of the Newmarket Craven Stakes followed in the 2000 Guinea during the same course and the same distance at two weeks and two hours later, and 34 years since Mytiko took free handicap during the Craven meeting – a classic test that no longer exists – and started the last gray to win the first classic of the colts.

Each statistic, however, is in the queue to be broken, and the gold field of John and Thady Gosden is the new favorite 7-2 to break the two sequences both after a convincing success in the Craven Stakes here on Wednesday.

On paper, it looked like an unusually open race in Craven and the market had trouble finding a favorite before settling on the gold field, 100-30, just before departure. He gently traveled for Kieran Shoemark towards the nearby side before a sharp foot tour puts him in the lead with a little under an overtaking to run, and the gold field and then extended his advantage with three lengths and a half to the post.
It was a second success in a major trial of 2000 Guinea in the space of five days for the Bloodstock operation of Juddmonte, while Jonquil by Andrew Balding, who was with the now retired Sir Michael Stout at the age of two, took the Greenham Stakes in Newbury on Saturday.

“It is a trial, it is not the Guinea and you are not completely wrapped for that,” said John Gosden, who won all the British classic bars the 2,000 Guinea. “The race puts them where you want, it is the idea of the tests. I probably did not have a foal winning a trial guinea like that before, he did it in a splendid style.

“It's nice to have a horse for the Guinea and ideal for Juddmonte because they have both the winner of the Greenham and this horse. They can be doubled here where they can decide and maybe we will go to France. The family will decide. “
Field of Gold replaced Aidan O'Brien's Twain, which remains a chance of 5-1, as a favorite for the 2000 Guinea while Scally Champ, the winner of the National Stakes, and Shadow of Light, the winner Dewhurst Stakes by Charlie Appleby, are the next in the 8-1 list.
