If you were going to Lab Do 20 years ago, you would have been welcomed with orange slices, water pistols and DJ noises unauthorized under a small geometric dome.
“Our life was much simpler at the time. We just wanted to do art and create things. We live in the moment and we wanted to have fun with our friends,” said Josh Flemming, who founded the scene alongside his two Jesse and dede brothers. “This is how we launched it in Coachella.”
The officially developed official scene, marked with imposing structures in the form of mushrooms and fluid rainbow fabric, is a must for most coachella lovers. It has its own range separate from the main party and creates the feeling of a festival at a festival. Its constantly evolving configuration has become a launch of budding DJs, an oasis for those looking for a lively dance floor and an improbable intimate place for the greatest artists. After two decades of programming of the DJ Hub, the Flemming brothers say that the only thing that has changed is the scale and the issues (and also the lack of orange slices).

Sitting behind the scenes, the trio, which is also behind the lightning in a bottle of bottles currently held at Lake Buena Vista, takes a break from booming speakers and thick crowds. They have already been in the Valley Desert for more than a week, because they still lead the construction of the structure. On the supervision of all the elements of production, they assume each of the roles: Jesse manages the conservation of music, Josh is on the physical structure and dedeto supervises business and operations.
While speaking of the way they select the artists of the Lab, the large crowd, less than a hundred feet distance, lets escape a massive roar. The three brothers all turn and look at each other. “A cries like that is rare,” said dede.
Trixie Mattel, the very first Drag Queen to play on stage, had just struck the decks, ready to play his mixture of the greatest successes of pop. Besides Mattel, acts like Zulan, DJ Pee .wee (alias Anderson .Paak), Zack Fox and Blu Detiger have left their mark in this year's rainbow forest. The surprise guests like Flavour Flav and too short also stopped.
In previous years, the scene welcomed names like Billie Eilish, Skrillex, Zedd, Odesza and Major Lazer. Each of these appearances was maintained under the wraps in the tradition of the surprise sets of Do Lab.
“We stayed faithful to what we were doing,” said Jesse. “Other outside artists have recognized this, and they started to come to our house.”
But when the trio started, they did not try to create a new Coachella scene – they say they were just trying to have a creative experience.
“We take music wherever we go. When we enter a truck full of things (to install), the first thing we do is to remove the speakers and we have put them in place. We play music while we work and all the other sites are simply calm, ”said Jesse. “So, at the beginning, we feared in certain speakers because we did not think that we were allowed to do so. We did not ask and we did not say it. All our friends were DJs at the time, so we never stopped playing music all weekend.”

Between their surprise guests and the DJ range, many festival -goers plan to spend their entire days under the coveted bad guys on the scene. Joseph Bocanegra attended 11 coaches and appreciates the variety of acts offered at Do Lab.
“There are no limits for the Lab. It is a good escape from everything else and it is always the perfect atmosphere at sunset,” said Bocanegra. “We never spend enough time here. We always say that we should have stayed longer. ”
Within the group of friends of Bocanegra, they all agree that from all the stages of Coachella – they could easily spend the most time in the heart of the laboratory.
“Many people, think about leaving and then realize:” Why go get something else if you have fun? ” And when they leave, they want the same energy and end up coming back, “said Jesse.
Whenever Tokimonsta plays the Do Lab, she says that it is similar to attend an animated family barbecue – except that the place is a giant musical tent. The DJ, born Jennifer Lee, is a regular at Do Lab. It went up for the first time in 2015 and continues to return. It should occur for the weekend 2, because the range of Do Lab changes entirely between weekends.
“The accent is less put on anyone who occurs or DJ. It is really the mood of the whole crowd,” said Tokimonsta. “You play this scene by the generosity of your heart as an artist. I come back and I play it because I really love it and I don't tend to do things that I don't like.”
During the formulation of the idea of the Lab, the Flemming brothers say that they did not think of what is going on. They never thought that their dome of initial art would evolve towards an essential part of the Coachella experience.
“20 years ago, we were the children there (in the crowd). We always feel like children here and we always create space for children. It's weird. We don't feel our age at all, ”said dede.
Jesse sounded and joking: “Over the next 20 years, we will transform this into a retirement home.”
