Ray Shero, longtime managing director of the NHL and CEO of Stanley Cup Cup, died, the League announced on Wednesday. He was 62 years old.
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced the new In a press release Wednesdaycalling Shero a “widely respected” spirit which “brightened the day of all those he met”.
“The smile and the personality of Ray Shero illuminated each piece in which he entered and brightened the day of all those he met. Shero spent three decades working in the NHL offices. He was a long -standing deputy managing director of Ottawa senators and Nashville predators at the start of his career. Shero progressed from there, finally hired as the Pittsburgh Penguins Director General in 2006. He excelled with the team, making the playoffs each year during which he supervised the Penguins.
After watching the team fail for two years, Shero won a Stanley Cup championship with the Penguins during the 2008-09 season. While the team continued to make the playoffs, it has developed a reputation to be sent by opponents with a small seeded. This led Shero to be dismissed after the 2013-14 season, when the Penguins fell to New York Rangers in the second round of the playoffs.
Shero was then hired by the New Jersey Devils. The team had a hard time improving, making the playoffs only once with Shero who ran things. He was dismissed in 2020 and did not obtain another GM job in the league.
After leaving the Devils, Shero worked as principal advisor to the Director General of Minnesota Wild. The Wild also paid tribute to Shero on Wednesday, saying that Shero will be “We lack a lot to all of us. “”
