THE Macallan is back with another new whiskey release, which should not surprise fans of this prolific speyside Scotch Distillery which always seems to have another expression pending in the wings. The last is the fourth expression of Distribute your world Series, and this time, the flavor journey is supposed to transport you to the city of Hong Kong.
Each whiskey in the Distribute your world The series focuses on a different place, with previous outings highlighting New York, London and Mexico (only one edition in Distil Your World Mexico, one of the two bottles, recently sold for more than $ 80,000 auction recently to collect funds for charity). The series is a collaboration between three people whose livelihoods are literally based on their palaces –Macallan The whiskey manufacturer in mind Euan Kennedy and the Roca brothers, owners of the three -star Michelin Celler de Can Roca in Spain. For this new version, the trio went to Hong Kong to eat, drink and soak up the essence of the city, then try to capture in a way in the form of a unique Scottish whiskey.
Of course, there will be a certain extent of the imagination involved during the taste of this expression, but the resulting single malt is a wedding of whiskey aged in European oak and the American oak barrels seasoned by Sherry, in 46.8% ABV bottle without declaration of age. “I wanted to develop the idea of the structure in this whiskey, reflecting the construction environment passing from the sea to the green heights behind,” Kennedy said in a press release. “To create a contrast in this whiskey, in the same way, Hong Kong is a city of contrast. A whiskey with many layers, to put again and again to find more stories to tell, its incredible complexity transporting you on a trip of flavor and memory.” The official tasting notes describe notes of tropical sweetness, ginger, spices, aged oak, grapefruit and a little umami in the mouth.
According to Joan Roca, the creative process of creating whiskey was the best part of this collaboration. “This is where chaos is, where we are open to anything, where everything is possible and, no matter how crazy it may seem,” he said. “Our culinary proposal is inspired by deeply rooted traditions and the different cultures of Hong Kong, while representing the modernity of the city.” To this end, the Rocas have created a special menu in their restaurant to associate whiskey and bring the flavors of Hong Kong in Spain. The dishes include the scallop and the Cheung Fun, the Cha siu bao, the steamed oral and the tea cake with duck and milk. A short film entitled “Reimagining Spaces” also accompanies the release of whiskey, documenting the Roca Brothers trip to Hong Kong.
THE Macallan Distil Your World Hong Kong is now available in limited number from this month, with only 500 bottles coming to the United States for private customers (SRP $ 4,750), and it will become more widely available across the country next September.
