A United Nations Friday report indicates that Iran uses advanced technologies, including drones, facial recognition and a citizen declaration application to suppress violations of its compulsory hijab laws.
A key element of effort is the Nazer application supported by the government, which allows the police and has “approved” public members to report alleged violations of women in vehicles, including those of ambulances, public transport and taxis.
The report describes the application as allowing users to download the vehicle license plate, the location and time of an alleged violation. According to the report, he alerts the police. Then, according to the report, the application “triggers an SMS (in real time) to the registered owner of the vehicle, warning them that they had been found in violation of the compulsory laws of the hijab and that their vehicles would be set up for having ignored these warnings”.
According to the report, the authorities use drones in Tehran and in the south of the country to monitor compliance with Hijab in public spaces, as well as new facial recognition software that was said to have been installed last year at the entrance to the University of Amirkabir in Tehran.
The report is due to go to the United Nations Human Rights Council on Tuesday.
