The first stage of the triple crown of horse races, the Kentucky Derby is on Saturday on NBC. Twenty horses will compete for the winner of $ 3.1 million on the $ 5 million handbag.
The issues will not be as high for most bettors, but the range of emotions felt can be quite similar to that felt by each of the twenty coaches and owners during these two minutes.
What adds so much spices to the race for roses is the fact that the favorite has only won 40 times since 1908. In fact, each of the last three years, the winner has won the prize at more than 15-1.
Journalism (7-2) is the favorite this year followed by Sandman (5-1), Render a judgment (12-1), American promise (12-1), and Sovereignty (10-1). This is an easy case to make so that each of these four thoroughbreds wins, but as already indicated, the favorites in cash less than 50% of the time in the derby.
Choice of experts for Kentucky Derby
So, what horses should the public be concentrated on? We asked some of NBC sports experts they loved in the 151st Kentucky Derby.
Drew Dinsick (@whale_capper) likes the youngest and the biggest horse in the field:
“It is rare to have a strong opinion on a breed which is as wide open and unpredictable as Kentucky Derby. It is undoubtedly a very strong field with a favorite completely worthy of journalism, but I was taken by physically impressive physically American promise (13-1), the Justify Colt formed by D. Wayne Lukas. Promise American was a late foal and who matures in the horse to beat for this race, in my opinion. His Virginia Derby Romp was a sign of things to come, and I think he has a huge race in him on Saturday to maintain this competitive field. Expect that the American promise (13-1) tracks down a rhythm in front of the first half-mile and is in the ideal position to take the lead in the last turn and hope that its pedigree and its recent development can help it hold on the section. Hopefully we get a price in the 15/1 range for this potential superstar in small groups. Good luck!”
Al Bernstein (@albernstein) expects the winner of Arkansas Derby to be found in the winner's circle:
“”Journalism (4-1) is the favorite of the morning line, and it is probably the fastest horse in the race. His style of harassment, however, could see him either take the rhythm, or make sure that the pre-runners relax on the face at the end. In my top five, I have four closures and journalism, and I see that the favorite being caught over the course. Any of the closures in my top 5 would not surprise me if they won. Who understands Editor (30-1), which will be a Grand Prix and has never won a race. He could give Steve Asmussen his first winner of the derby after going 0 for 26. ”
Here is the top 5 of Bernstein:
1st: Sandman
2nd: Journalism
3rd: Sovereignty
4th: Burnham Square
5th: Editor
Jay Croucher (@croucherjd) is also tilted into one of the favorites:
“I'm going to stay simple. I like Sovereignty (11-1). I hope that the rhythm melts and then I think it is the strongest stronger. »»
Brad Thomas (@Mrbradthomas) likes the horse formed Ian Wilkes with a derby victory in his lines:
“While Journalism is the clear favorite with the best speed figures on the ground, I try to find a way to beat the favorite and be paid generously if I do it. Recently, the speed killed in Churchill. However, since 2014, the horse with the highest figures entering this race has only won three times. At +270 and probably closer to 3/2 per hour of post, journalism can lose all its value.
There is an idea that with about seven horses at early rhythm, you would probably want to attack a late horse to hunt them. There are quite a few who have a certain value, but still not far enough on the rating map for me.
I turn my attention to the gelding Burnham Square, the winner of the blue grass. Burnham Square (20-1) is one of the eight horses on the ground that ran on Churchill's dirt. Having broken his young daughter at the end of December, Burnham Square improved in each race. If this race has a ton of speed, why not support the horse that improved its speed figures in three consecutive races? »»
Vaughn Dalzell (@vmoneysports) looks below on the picture of the dimensions of his choice in the derby:
“In a race that sees long -term money often and regularly the last handful of years, I will be the one who will take along. Mohawk flying (35-1) is a horse that seems to improve each departure. I stop for a moment because the surface and the distance are something new for him, but I like the way Beckman manages this horse and hears it slowly. Flying Mohawk will show a late kick and prove the price of admission to come on Saturday. »»
The difference in opinion between NBC Sports experts highlights the unpredictability of the race for roses. What we know: 151st The Kentucky Derby promises what it always offers: a mixture of a good dose of tradition, a little chaos and the two largest minutes of sport. Take advantage of the race this Saturday on NBC!
